What really matters in SEO?

The Google Search home page to represent what matters most in SEO.

The 80/20 principle states that 80% of our results come from 20% of the effort. The same principle also counts in SEO.

As we have seen over the last 2 years of doing SEO, only a few of the activities we do account for most of the results for our clients.

In this article, we will look at what these activities are and how you can apply them to your own website.

Website speed

Website speed refers to how long it takes for your website to fully load on your visitor’s devices. According to Google, the average time it takes for mobile websites across the world to load is 15.3 seconds.

Walmart reported that for every 100 milliseconds that their website loaded faster, they got a 1% better conversion rate.

So website speed is important, but how important is it really?

For our clients, even when we did no other SEO-related activities, we saw an immediate jump in impressions on Google Search Console when we improved the speed of our client’s websites.

Website speed improves the customer’s experience of your website, which is really important to Google. Your bounce rate can also increase if your website takes longer to load.

Great Quality content

Content can be anything from landing pages and other pages to blogs and videos. Making sure that the content you post on your website is of great quality makes a big difference.

In Google’s helpful content update released in May 2022, Google started penalising entire websites if a large amount of your online content is not helpful.

Google defines helpful content as content that meets the user’s expectation of a page and is better than other similar content across the web.

Removing unhelpful content can actually help your website. Read our blog on how to create great quality content.

Our experience

For the past few years, we have focussed on creating great quality consistently for our clients. This has helped our clients to rank their websites well on Google Search and they get a fair amount of new customers from that.

Writing a blog that is really interesting or that solves a potential customer’s problem helps them. Additionally, such blogs do well on Organic traffic.

When people read your blogs they begin to see you as the expert in your field (which you are). Then, when they have a problem that you can help them with, they will come to you first.

Consistency

Being consistent is really important in SEO. It can mean that you create a new blog post, page or video every week for years.

We have actually tested this. Websites on which we post a bunch of blogs in one month and then nothing for the rest of the year see a spike in traffic. However, once you have posted nothing new on the website for a few months the SEO rankings and traffic start to subside.

On other sites where we post anywhere from 16 times per month to even just once per month perform well since we are consistent.

So how much content should you create? Only as much as you can handle consistently over the next few years.

Conclusion

That’s it, the 3 most important things regarding the SEO of your website. If you are strapped for time it will be better to only focus on these few things.
